In this online sewing course, you’ll learn how to make three stunning scatter cushion styles: a tailored piped cushion, a romantic ruffle cushion, and a textured brush fringe cushion.

Each cushion teaches a different technique and gives you the confidence to add your own creative spin.

This course is more than just learning how to sew cushions—it’s about building skills that you can use again and again in your sewing journey. From working with trims and inserting zippers, to shaping corners and selecting the right insert, you'll gain experience and confidence with every project.

Master 3 Beautiful Cushion Finishing Techniques

Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to measure and cut your fabric, prepare and attach trims like piping, ruffles, and brush fringe, and sew in a concealed zip for a clean, removable finish.

Each lesson is broken down into clear, step-by-step instructions with helpful tips on pinning, seam allowances, and finishing techniques.

By the end, you’ll have completed three unique cushion styles and gained the skills to confidently create and customise many more.

For Ruffle, Piped, and Brush Fringe Scatter Cushions

Basic Tools

  • Fabric scissors

  • Ruler or measuring tape

  • Fabric chalk or disappearing fabric pen

  • Pins or fabric clips

  • Sewing machine

  • Zipper foot and / or piping foot (depending on the lesson)

  • Overlocker (serger) or sewing machine with zigzag stitch

  • Iron and ironing board

  • Seam ripper (just in case!)

Materials

  • Main cushion fabric (cotton or linen)

  • Thread (to match or contrast with your fabric)

  • Feather or polyester cushion insert

    • Tip: Choose an insert 5 cm larger than your cushion cover for a fuller look

  • Zipper or continuous zip tape (longer than cushion width)

  • Zipper slider (if using continuous zip)

Materials For Piped Cushion

  • Piping cord

  • Bias strips (cut from same or contrasting fabric)

Materials For Ruffle Cushion

  • Ruffle fabric strips (cut on the straight grain or bias, depending on style)

  • Optional: gathering foot or ruffle foot (can also gather manually)

Materials For Brush Fringe Cushion

  • Brush fringe trim (length to fit all four sides of cushion + 10 cm extra)
